Golf Medals & Eights
The Medals events morphed into the Eights.
The first attempt was called Tiers.
Then it was called Eights for two groups then four Sixes.
And now it's four Eights. The Gripp Trophy is awarded to the winner of the Fourth Eight
This trophy was won by Mrs W (Edith Augusta) Gripp in 1930, a member of South Brisbane Croquet Club. In the days before the Australian Croquet Council (now ACA) was established, the states of Australia affiliated to the British Croquet Association (BCA).
In return for their affiliation the BCA donated a British Gold Medal and a British Silver Medal for each state. States or provinces in New Zealand and South Africa received the same. The British Gold Medal and British Silver Medal events ran from 1924 to 1939.
In 1930 Mrs Arnold won the British Gold Medal (Qld). In 1930 our trophy winner Mrs Gripp was placed second in the British Silver Medal run by the QCA (now called CAQ) and was awarded this trophy donated by BCA.
The trophy has been in the CAQ office since 2007 when the South Brisbane Croquet Club closed down.
